Behind the Frames: Ameet Dass on Building a Career, One Scene at a Time

From West Bengal to Faridabad, Delhi and finally Mumbai, Ameet Dass has built his career in Hindi television. He began directing with Devanshi on Colors and has since directed shows for &TV, Zee TV and Star Plus. He tells us about his journey and what a director's day really looks like.

"Direction is not just about framing shots or calling 'Action' and 'Cut.'"

His journey

1. What was your journey from West Bengal to Mumbai like?

My journey began in West Bengal and took me to Faridabad for my education, then to Delhi, where I pursued a diploma in filmmaking. It eventually brought me to Mumbai to follow my dreams.

Every place I lived in taught me something valuable. My formal training in filmmaking gave me a strong foundation in camera techniques, screenwriting, storytelling and direction. However, Mumbai taught me that in this industry, talent alone is not enough. Patience, discipline, perseverance and consistency are equally essential to building a successful career.

Moving to Mumbai was more than just changing cities. It was a conscious decision to pursue my passion, take risks and build the life I had always envisioned for myself.

For me, every opportunity has been a learning experience. Getting your first break in the industry is undoubtedly important, but what matters even more is how you turn that opportunity into a long-term career through hard work, dedication and continuous growth.

Because success is not just about getting an opportunity; it is about proving yourself, growing with every experience and consistently creating your own path forward.

Life on a TV set

2. A daily show means shooting fast, often for 200+ episodes. What does a director's day look like?

A director's day in daily television is usually fast-paced, demanding and full of challenges. You have to understand the script, plan the scenes, guide actors in their performances, and coordinate closely with the camera team and other departments to ensure that everything comes together seamlessly.

A director must constantly balance three essential elements: creativity, time and continuity.

Some scenes demand deep emotional intensity, while others present technical challenges. At times, the shooting schedule can be extremely tight. Despite these challenges, the director must ensure that the story feels natural, engaging and emotionally connected to the audience.

For me, direction is not just about framing shots or calling "Action" and "Cut." It is about bringing together the vision, talent and efforts of an entire team to tell one compelling story.
